Ankylosing Spondylitis & Management through Ayurveda || what is Ankylosing Spondylitis| Dr.VARDHAN

Ankylosing Spondylitis is a diverse type of chronic inflammation of the spine and also Sacroiliac Joints. The Sacroiliac Joints are positioned in the low back where the Sacrum (the bone straight above the tailbone) joins the iliac bones (bones on either side of the upper buttocks). Chronic inflammation in these areas creates pain and stiffness in and around the spine. Over time, chronic spinal infection (Spondylitis) can lead to a full cementing synchronically (Fusion) of the vertebrae, and a process referred to as Ankylosis. Ankylosis leads to loss of movement of the spine. It is also known as “Bamboo Spine.”
Ankylosing Spondylitis is also a Systemic Rheumatic disorder, meaning it can affect other tissues throughout the body such as the Eyes, Heart, Lungs, and Kidneys as is two to three times more common in males than in females. The most common age of onset is in the second and third decades of life.

The Symptoms of AS are related to inflammation of the Spine, Joints, and other organs. Fatigue is a common sign connected with active inflammation. Inflammation of the spine produces Pain and lot of Stiffness in the low back, upper buttock area, neck, and the remainder of the spine. Patients who have continued, severe inflammation of the spine can develop a complete bony coalition of the spine. Once fused, the pain in the spine disappears, but the patient has a total loss of Spine mobility. These fused spines are unusually brittle and vulnerable to breakage (fracture) when involved in trauma, such as Motor Vehicle Accidents.

Chronic Spondylitis and Ankylosis cause progressive curvature of the Thoracic Spine, limiting breathing capacity. Spondylitis can also move areas where ribs attach to the upper spine, besides limiting lung capacity. Ankylosing Spondylitis can create inflammation and scarring of the lungs, producing cough and shortness of breath.
