Gout
is a condition that results from crystals of uric acid depositing in tissues of
the body. Gout characterizes by an overload of uric acid in the body and
attacks of joint inflammation (Arthritis).
Chronic Gout can lead to deposits of solid lumps of uric acid in and
around the joints, reduced kidney function, and kidney stones.
The
tiny joint at the base of the big toe is the most probable site of an Acute Gout Attack. Other joints that
can be affected involve the knees,
ankles, wrists, fingers, and elbows. AcuteGout attacks are characterized by a rapid start of pain in the involved
joint followed by warmth, swelling, reddish discoloration, and marked
tenderness. Tenderness can be strong so that even a blanket rubbing the skin
over the affected joint can be unbearable. Patients can develop a fever with
acute gout attacks. These painful attacks usually recede in hours to days, with
or without medication. In exceptional cases, an attack can persist for weeks.
Most patients with Gout will endure repeated attacks of Arthritis over the years.
Gout
is nine times more prevalent in men than in women. It predominantly strikes
males after puberty, with a peak age of 75. In women, gout attacks usually
occur after menopause.
The
most reliable test for gout is finding uric acid crystals in the joint fluid
obtained by joint aspiration (Arthrocentesis) while an elevated blood level of
uric acid (hyperuricemia) may indicate an increased risk of Gouty Arthritis.
